Canada needs skilled people.
Across industries, employers are facing growing labour shortages while many individuals remain unaware of the careers available to them or uncertain about how to access them. The opportunity is there, but opportunity alone isn’t enough. People need exposure to new possibilities, practical support, meaningful connections and the confidence to believe they belong.
That is where Build a Dream makes a difference.
Career exploration may be where the journey begins, but it is rarely where it ends.
Every day, we help people discover careers they never imagined, connect with employers and industry leaders, overcome barriers, access training and develop the confidence to build meaningful futures. Along the way, we are doing something even bigger: helping strengthen Canada’s future workforce.
Every success story represents more than one person’s achievement. It reflects stronger industries, more inclusive workplaces and communities that are better prepared for the future.
Every Career Begins with Possibility
For one participant, that possibility began at a Build a Dream Career Discovery Expo.
Before attending, she wasn’t sure which direction to take. Like many young people, she knew there were career options available but had never been introduced to many of them. Walking through the event, speaking with employers and learning about skilled trades opened her eyes to opportunities she had never considered.
What started as curiosity quickly became a career goal.
With continued support from Build a Dream’s Career Support Services team, she received guidance throughout her apprenticeship journey, helping her navigate questions, challenges and next steps.
Today, she is nearing completion of her 310S Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship.
Her story is a reminder that career exploration can change the direction of someone’s life. When that exploration is paired with ongoing support, it creates the foundation for long-term career success.
Support Doesn’t End When the Event Does
Choosing a career is only one step.
Building a career often requires encouragement, practical resources and someone who understands the challenges that come with entering industries where women remain underrepresented.
For one electrician, that support arrived at exactly the right time.
“I almost gave up on the trades altogether, and now I’m still in and going strong in my first loved trade. Endlessly grateful for all the advice and help you both gave me.”
Another participant described Build a Dream as the first place where she felt genuinely understood.
Because many members of our Career Support Services team have firsthand experience working in the skilled trades, their guidance is rooted in lived experience. They understand the barriers, the questions and the realities that participants often face because they have walked those paths themselves.
That understanding helped this participant remain in her career and gave her the confidence to advocate for improved workplace policies that better support women in her shop.
When people feel supported, they don’t just overcome barriers. They become part of creating better workplaces for everyone who comes next.
Small Supports Can Create Life-Changing Outcomes
Sometimes the most meaningful support isn’t one major milestone.
It’s a series of practical actions that remove barriers one step at a time.
It might be helping someone access training.
It might be connecting them with an employer.
It might be preparing them for an interview.
Or it might be something as simple, and as important, as ensuring they have properly fitting personal protective equipment.
One welder shared:
“I would not have been able to enroll in these courses were it not for your financial support. I’m really enjoying my classes and, oh my gosh, having PPE that fits has made a world of difference!”
To someone outside the industry, properly fitting PPE may seem like a small detail.
To the person wearing it every day, it represents safety, confidence and the ability to perform their job comfortably. It also sends a powerful message:
You belong here.
Removing barriers, no matter how small they may seem, helps people continue moving toward careers where they can succeed.
Finding Community Along the Way
Jie’s career journey demonstrates how lasting impact is built over time.
As a welder in Edmonton, Jie received financial assistance through Build a Dream to complete her Canadian Welding Bureau training, allowing her to continue progressing in her career.
She later completed additional training, attended networking events and connected with women working across the skilled trades.
Each opportunity helped her grow professionally.
More importantly, each experience helped her believe she belonged.
“Seeing so many strong, supportive and successful women in this industry gave me the confidence to believe that I belong here too.”
Confidence is often built through connection.
When people see others who look like them succeeding, they begin to imagine themselves succeeding too.
That confidence doesn’t stay with one person. It spreads.
Many participants who first attend Build a Dream as learners later return as mentors, volunteers, exhibitors or industry leaders, inspiring the next generation to pursue careers they may never have considered otherwise.
That ripple effect is how stronger industries are built.
Every Success Story Strengthens Canada’s Workforce
Behind every Build a Dream success story is more than an individual achievement.
There is an apprentice completing her certification.
An electrician choosing to remain in the trades.
A welder gaining the skills needed to advance her career.
A participant finding the confidence to advocate for workplace change.
A mentor helping another young person discover what is possible.
Each story represents another skilled worker contributing to Canada’s economy, helps employers access the talent they need, and strengthens industries facing critical workforce shortages.
This is why Build a Dream exists.
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to discover meaningful work, develop valuable skills and build a career where they can thrive. Through career exploration, workforce development programming, mentorship, employer connections and ongoing support, we help individuals move from possibility to purpose.
Because when one person succeeds, the impact reaches far beyond a single career.
It strengthens workplaces.
It builds more inclusive industries.
It creates stronger communities.
And together, those individual journeys help build the workforce Canada needs for tomorrow.
