“He’s so proud of what I’ve done and what I’ve accomplished,” says Tahira about her father. Her parents were initially hesitant about the financial path Tahira chose but they just didn’t know what that meant for her future. She says that parental pressure can be well-meaning but it’s important for parents to support their child, even if they don’t initially agree with the career choice.
Choosing a career
Tahira thinks that we can put a lot of pressure on youth to have it all figured out at an early age. Her recommendation is to help focus on accomplishing smaller goals, and building skills, instead of just settling on a specific career. When she was young, no one was able to connect Tahira’s passions (travel and wanting to help people) to a career; that’s changed now for young women who have access to more information. She recommends thinking about waht is important to you and what lifestyle you want (it’s different for everyone), and then thinking about a future that combines your ideals and passions. It may take time to figure it out!
